Second-hand, Borrowed or Vintage - it's the Future! #Chicandstylish #LINKUP

Morning my lovely friends.
How's your week been?
Nice to get away for the weekend isn't it?  Well that's just what I did recently with my mum and sister.  Mum's choice to head off to Rye in East Sussex for a relaxing couple of days - so barring the walk up hill to the town - opps! it really was.  We had rooms for two nights in the River Haven Hotel which served it's purpose with comfortable rooms, decent meals and a bar - what more does a girl need!
We arrived on Sunday and headed up into the town stopping at The Mermaid Inn for a light lunch and welcomed drink. This quaint little hotel is a grade II listed building and boasts 7 ghosts that have been seen throughout the hotel! The building has 600 years of history & has many stories about it's colourful past.  We enjoyed hearing all about the smugglers, ghosts and celebrities that frequented the venue - and we were very enchanted to hear that my sister's family were descendants of a particular smuggler and ghost, John Diamond,  who was mentioned in their history as being part of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang.  We were shown his named room and also the cellar - I have to admit I had goose-bumps whilst the stories were told and the rooms were viewed - I'd love to return and actually stay in the hotel one night - imagine if the ghosts were real!!!!
Sunday evening we stayed put in our hotel, relishing a roast dinner with a couple of drinks in the bar. Feeling the cold we returned to my mum's room with drinks where we chatted more before heading off to bed.  The rooms were just right having tea/coffee and TV's in the room - it was rather strange to have the room to myself - let alone the remote control - ha ha!
Monday was my mum's birthday - we had breakfast where she opened her presents & cards, I can't remember the last time we were together in the morning for her special day!
Rye town is full of interesting shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants & we also partook in a cream tea and lunch in Haydens a small family-run B&B in the heart of Rye overlooking the town salts.  Prevalent in Rye were plenty of charity/thrift shops, they seem to be in abundance in every town and whilst I'm not a huge fan of shopping in them - I do like to borrow clothes from my daughters' - well they borrow mine enough!

This is a sponsored blog post.

As sustainable-conscious consumers carry on buying pre-loved items a new study suggests that the UK's second hand item market is set to surge in the coming years, re-enforcing reports it could overtake the fast fashion market by 2029.  With that in mind, and more charity shops & vintage clothes sales springing up by the month the latest trend of on-line buying for second hand bargains is becoming a really popular way to buy pre-loved garments and accessories.  Having already heard of Ebay that sells millions of second hand items - there's also Market place, Depop and Micolet - a Spanish based company that is expanding into the UK selling pre-loved designer and high street brands alike.

I'm wearing a borrowed Coast dress that belongs to my daughter.  I was pleased to find the dress fitted, albeit slightly tight on the bust, but still very wearable.  I love the up - down hem line which is a big trend at the moment.  Black dresses are essential for the black-tie-dinner-dance scenario, this cute number with flamboyant red roses on the bottom is sure to get you noticed for the trendy lady you are!
It's so good to get more wear out of an outfit, so sharing with friends and family seems a good way to do it.  Some of you might go to an annual dinner dance, us ladies don't want to be seen in the same dress the next year do we!  What about buying from a pre-loved site or sharing with a friend?  You can see when I borrowed my friends long black dress for a Style not Age challenge last year.

I'm featuring this outfit on the blog next Monday - showing off the gorgeous dark red sling bags I was gifted from Lotus Shoes.  They have an interesting detail on the heel - do stop by to check them out!

  1. Thank you so much for sharing my post. I started blogging 2 years ago after retirement and being encouraged by my daughter to take up a hobby. Before then I had never read a blog and started to look for fashion and lifestyle of similar aged people (people who are not a perfect size 12/14) There are so few out there that this is how stylishatsixty started. Once again a very big thank you.

    1. Well done and congratulations - its a big learning curve for me, how about you? You are welcome, it's good to see your family at the wedding - my daughter didn't want photos on the blog, so I haven't featured my dress or anyone else, but I'd really like to. x

  6. Jacqui, you are stunning, my friend! What a beautiful dress and you wear it so well. I am a huge fan of second hand shopping and have been shopping second hand much more than new for the past year. I definitely need to be in the mood to sift through the second hand racks and I can get a little grossed out...but everything I buy goes directly into the washing machine as soon as I get home. I have found so many amazing pieces at second hand shops. Thanks for sharing this interesting information about the direction we are heading with it. It is so much better for the environment!

The dress looks wonderful on you. Isn't it great when we can wear our children's clothes? My daughter is 13 now and since I am petite, I can now wear her clothes (and she borrows mine too :-)

  17. Happy birthday to your mum! what a beautiful dress you wore too! I love second hand shopping - my mum and grandma do it often and sometimes they pick up things for me when they do. I don't get to do it as often as I'd like with the little ones in tow, haha!

I do borrow clothes from my sister on occasion too - she like to borrow from me as well, although being further apart now as she lives about an hour away we don't swap clothes as much as we used to!

Thanks for the link up. Hope that you have been having a great week :) It's to be super hot today so we are going to try get out early and avoid the heat!

  19. Oh my goodness, what a glamorous dress Jacqui! It sounds like you've been having a very sociable time of late, how lovely for you. Second-hand dressing is the way forward if we're all trying to be greener in our purchases. I love that you can still get the buzz of shopping but that it's recycled too. Well done on this piece x

  20. Doesn't Jill look gorgeous in her wedding outfit, as do you in your post frock. Sadly my days of dinner dances are well gone, yet I can't bear to let go of my ball gowns and cocktail numbers. Sounds like you had a very special weekend in Rye with your mum, lovely stuff.
